Prince Rupert – Day 1

Well guess what – it was raining when I woke up this morning. Apparently they have had a lot of rain here, more than normal it seems. I was talking to the couple on the front desk and they say the weather patterns up here are getting quite screwed up. Still not convinced about global warming & climate change? Visit a psychiatrist. Up here – Prince Rupert is situated on the north coast of Kaien Island – it is more noticeable that the ice melt in the Arctic is actually happening. It is my intention to get a little closer to it.

Having got up and availed myself of the complimentary coffee & toast the hotel provide in the lounge, I then headed off for my usual exploratory walk. Having wandered up the main street (2nd Avenue) and round to Cow Bay I found the visitor centre and some info on a hostel in downtown Prince Rupert. On the way back to the hotel I found the hostel and then visited the mall I walked past earlier to “raid the Post Office”. It is ok I did this legally and didn’t really rob them of anything. I got a mailing box so I could post back the two books I had finished to my good mate Bruce Custodian of The Books! I also wanted the space back in my bags – although I don’t suppose I will notice the reduction in weight.

I returned to my room and packaged everything up and then consulted the helpful lady on reception about booking a ferry to Alaska. She gave me the number (well two actually) for Alaska Ferries and informed me that I could call from my room as all local calls were free. (Bastard Theftcon take note!)

I went out again, posted books off (surface mail Brucey so expect ‘em in about a month) had some lunch (pizza in local restaurant dear Trogg. I don’t know how many Michelin stars a pizza could ever be worth) and then went back to arrange a ferry. I called Alaska Ferries and the very helpful bloke who answered the telephone informed me that they weren’t open today – they open at 17:00 on Sunday! I thanked him for his help – especially as he had actually bothered answering the ‘phone (I wouldn’t have) and said I would ring back then. I will now book two nights in the hostel, or more depending when the next ferry might sail!

I did try to take Spank out for a walk but he took one look at the rain and went and hid in the room. A helicopter flew past and he had a bit of an “accident” on the carpet, so I cleaned that up and told him to sit on the windowsill and watch the ships in the harbour. He was alright doing that.

I am going to see if I can get this posted through the weirdly intermittent Internet access I get via the hotels wireless network. I can connect to the network with no problem but basically anything more than one link away from my home page results in bugger all! I also haven’t been able to view any emails I might have, so if I get this posted before I can pick them up – bear with me email senders I will reply to you as soon as I can.

Well the posting idea fell flat on its face and the rain has started with a vengeance – that seems quite apt as the rain seems to have some form of vengeance with the local area, perhaps the locals forgot the required sacrifice!
Having given up on attempting to bully the network into letting me at the Interweb, I have decided to opt for some construction & destruction with Supreme Commander.
